Trying new things

This week, I made this red linen tote for my aunt’s birthday. It is hand block printed with one of my new linocuts. I also added a little hand painting and embroidery to it. I had never made a tote before, so I was quite pleased with how it came out. It was supposed to be an every day bag for her to use on her errands, she said it was really nice so she was only going to use it for special occasions. Not what I had in mind at all, lol!

The other thing I made this past week was a baby pinafore for my cousin’s new baby. I’ve never made baby clothes before and it was so easy and so much fun. And, it was so tiny! I think I am going to make another!

Lastly, I’m just going to toot my own horn a little and post that my oil/wax painting “Epistrophy” based on a Thelonious Monk song is hanging in the window of Random Framing. Any exposure is good exposure, right?

It’s not a great pic, but you get the idea.

End result

I am very happy with how versatile this block print has turned out. I originally made it to use for home items on my Etsy store, but I think it also works for a wristlet. Of course, I had to keep this one for myself. 🙂

Here are the hot pads and a potholder:

There are so many possibilities for this block print, pillows, bags, tea towels, etc. What do you think?

Coaster upgrade

I am now on my 10th or 12th set of linen coasters and I think these are the best so far. What is different from my previous sets, you ask? Well, the new ones are double-lined with batting and fusible vinyl making them fairly water repellent. The problem with fabric coasters is that if there is a lot of condensation on the glass, it eventually soaks into the fabric and then that moisture reaches the table surface. Adding the vinyl really helps to block the moisture from seeping to the tabletop. It isn’t 100% waterproof, but it is much more water repellent than the previous versions. This does make for more work, but I am striving for a higher end, quality product, not something that you would buy at Target. No offense to Target, I love Target, but I want to create something that is handmade, unique and that reflects my fine art. This set is now available on my Etsy shop.
